Photographic Memories: January 2013

Below are photos of William Savage and some of his descendants.

William Savage was the second child of John and Rebecca Savage. He was born in Abbeville Co., South Carolina about 1831. He moved to St. Clair Co., Alabama near the community of Coal City (now Wattsville) around 1835.

William served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He enlisted as a Pvt. in Co. G, 18th Regiment, Alabama Infantry.

William married Mary Francis Jones 18 May 1851. They had four children:

James H., John W., William W., and Allen J. Savage.

After the death of his first wife, William married Martha Edge.
Martha, born 30 Jul 1843 in Georgia, was the daughter of Obediah Edge (born 1819) and his first wife, Nancy L. Edge. Obediah Edge later married Rhoda Russell Smith from Tennessee.

William Savage and Martha Edge were married 16 Apr 1865 in St. Clair Co. AL.

About 1867, William moved the family to Bedford Co., Tennessee, where his older brother, Marshall, had moved earlier. However, by 1877, William returned to St. Clair County, Alabama, where he is listed on that census in 1880.

Around 1881, William moved to Cass County, Texas, where he first appears on the tax rolls in 1882. William and his 2nd wife Martha, had six children:

Amanda, George Washington, Isaac, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, and Victoria Arlona Savage.

His second wife, Martha died in Cass County on February 28, 1896. On April 28, 1900 William married Mrs. Sallie E. Porterfield. William died in Cass County, Texas on March 11, 1906.

Allen Jerry Savage was the fourth child of William and Mary Francis (Jones) Savage. He was born 1 June 1859 in St. Clair Co. AL, and died 15 May 1944 St. Clair Co., AL. He married Susan Manning, daughter of James and Nancy Gann Manning, on 10 July 1882. Susan Manning was born 5 Nov 1861 and died 20 Aug1939. Allen and Susan had five children:

Leander Lloyd, John Melton, Leila, William Charles, Minnie, and Chester Lauren Savage.

Obadiah Edge was born in 1819 and died in 6 Jan 1894. Obadiah and his first wife Nancy Edge were the parents of Martha Edge who married William Savage. Obadiah is pictured here with his 2nd wife, Rhoda Russell Smith Edge and granddaughter Rhoda Elizabeth Wells.

George Washington Savage was the second child of William Savage and Martha Edge. He was born 14 Nov 1869 in TN. His father returned the family to St. Clair Co. AL in the 1870s and moved them to Cass Co. TX in 1882. He married Mary Missouri Roberts in Cass Co. TX 7 Jul 1892. Mary was born 22 Jul 1869 in GA. Her parents were James Roberts and Martha Cole.

In Dec 1900 George and Mary moved to Parker Co. TX. George died 17 Feb 1955 and Mary died 28 Feb 1960. They are buried at Brock Cemetery in Parker Co. TX. Their children: Elizabeth, James William, Georgia M., Rosa Ella Carrie, Girty, Samuel Jackson, John Henry, Callie Alice, and Hattie Lee Savage.

Andrew, Ike, Tom, and George were sons of William Savage and Martha Edge

George Washington Savage was the second child of William Savage and Martha Edge. (For more information on his family, see above)

Issac O. "Ike" Savage was the third child of William Savage and Martha (Edge) Savage. He was born 22 Jul 1873 in Bedford Co., TN. He married Mary Bell Graves in Cass Co. TX in 1898. Mary Bell Graves was born in 6 Jun 1878 in AR and died 15 Aug 1957. Isaac died from cancer 13 Aug 1930. Their children: Ethel W., George W., and Estel M. Savage.

Thomas Jefferson Savage was the fourth child of William Savage and Martha (Edge) Savage. He was born 14 Dec 1875 in Bedford Co. TN. He married Ardella Dodd 10 Jul 1898 in Cass Co. TX. Ardella’s parents were J. Edward Dodd and Sarah Jane Dodd. Ardella was born 13 Feb 1878 in Cass Co. TX. She died 13 Jan 1954. Thomas died 4 Jan 1930 from pneumonia. Thomas and Ardella are buried in Courtland Cemetery in Cass Co. TX. Their children: Luther, Graqcie, Jewel Edward, infant who died young, and Jesse Thomas Savage.

Andrew Jackson Savage was the fifth child of William Savage and Martha (Edge) Savage. He was born in Coal City AL 31 Mar 1877. He married Callie Mae Nichols from AK 24 Dec 1905. Callie was born 22 May 1887. Andrew and Callie lived in Cass Co. TX until about 1909. They moved to OK where they lived until about 1920. Then they moved to Parker Co., TX. Andrew died 4 Jan 1945 from carcinoma of the liver. He and Callie are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Parker Co. TX. Their children: Herschel Carson, Audrey Lucille, Clyde Herbert, Charlien LaVaughn, Kathryn Cloteel, John W., and Cora Maxine Savage.

Susan Idella Jones was the daughter of William Henry Jones and Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Denton. She was born 25 Nov 1897 in Parker Co. TX and died 30 Jan 1984 in Parker Co. She married James William "Jim" Savage 6 Sep 1916 near Weatherford, TX.

Three Generations:

George Washington Savage and Mary Missouri Roberts were the parents of Jim Savage. Jim and Idella Jones were the parents of Lorene and Lloyd Savage.

Sam and John Henry Savage

Samuel Jackson Savage was the sixth child of George Washington Savage and Mary Missouri (Roberts) Savage. He was born 9 Oct 1901 in Parker Co. TX. He married Ona Viola Stover 8 Nov 1921. Samuel died 13 Dec 1962 in a house fire in Weatherford, TX. He is buried in Brock Cemetery, Parker Co. TX.

John Henry Savage was the seventh child of George Washington Savage and Mary Missouri (Roberts) Savage. He was born 9 Nov 1903 in Parker Co. TX and died 23 Dec 1915 in Parker Co. TX. He is buried at Brock Cemetery in Parker Co.

Herschel Carson Savage was the first child of Andrew Jackson Savage and Callie (Nichols) Savage. He married Candis Skelly. They had one child: Herschel Carson Savage, Jr.

Kenneth Luther Ramsey was the husband of Kathryn Cloteel Savage.

Cloteel was the fifth child of Andrew Jackson Savage. Kenneth and Cloteel had three children: Kenneth Luther,Jr., Patricia Ann, and Thomas Andrew.

Hattie Savage Sosebee

Hattie Lee Savage was the ninth child of George Washington Savage and Mary Missouri (Roberts) Savage. She was born 1 Aug 1909 in Parker Co. TX. She married Robert B. Sosebee 18 Jun 1938. Hattie was a nurse for many years. She died 30 Sept 1989 in Weatherford, TX. Hattie and Robert had no children.

Callie Alice Savage was the eighth child of George Washington Savage and Mary Missouri (Roberts) Savage. She was born 12 May 1907 in Parker Co. TX. She married I.B. Williams 30 Nov 1933. Callie died 18 June 1990 in Weatherford, TX. She is buried at East Greenwood Cemetery, Weatherford TX. Callie and I.B. had no children.

Ruby Lucille Savage was the daughter of Jim Savage and Idella Jones Savage. She was born 8 Nov 1923 in Parker Co. TX and died 11 May 2002. She married C. W. "Dub" Hardin. They had three children.
